Welcome to Upper Phase 2021 - 2022

Introduction
Miss Pannell and Miss O'Brien would like to welcome you to the Upper Phase of our school.
This year will begin with a whole school topic based on the book 'Here We Are'. This is specifically aimed to support children in re-connecting with each other and school. It aims to help them make sense of their world and their role in it.
Each class will explore the key themes of:
- Earth’s place in the wider universe
- The Earth’s environment
- Our place on the planet as humans
- How we, as humans, relate to each other
- Other species and our responsibility towards them
- Belonging and community
- Our responsibility as world citizens
PE for Year 5 will take place on Tuesdays and PE for Year 6 will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays for Term 2 and we would like children to come to school in their PE kits for these days.
Classroom Learning
In line with current guidance we are maintaining social distancing between phase bubbles within the school. Year 5 and Year 6 (Upper Phase) are sat in rows facing the front of the classroom. Each child has an individual resource pack in their drawers so limited equipment is shared. Handwashing is carried out at regular intervals throughout the day alongside frequent hand sanitiser use. Any shared resources are cleaned after each use and reading books are quarantined for 72 hours. All classroom windows are kept open for ventilation throughout the school day. The photographs below will give you an idea of the classroom layout.

Homework
Every Monday, the children will be given weekly homework for Reading, Writing, Spelling and Maths which will be due in the next Monday.
Reading: The children in Year 5 and 6 are expected to read 50 pages a week (a recommended 10 pages a night) and record this in their reading journals. The children will also be set a quick comprehension task on Purple Mash relating to a chapter from a story they will need to read on Purple Mash.
Spelling: On Tuesdays, the children will stick a spelling sheet in the back of their reading journals. They are to practise their 15 spellings (10 that follow the week’s spelling rule and 5 from the Y5/6 statutory list) using the ‘Look, Cover, Say, Write, Check’ sheet. They will be tested every Tuesday on their weekly spellings.
Writing: On the children’s spelling sheet every week, there will an explanation about what their writing homework (based on their reading book) is for the week. The children are to complete this in the front of their reading journals. In most cases, it will be a task involving writing sentences based on a grammar focus.
Maths: Every week there will be two tasks set on MyMaths. The children have been given their login details and are free to use MyMaths at any point for their own revision.
