Welcome to Early Phase 2021 - 2022

Introduction
Miss Lampard and Miss Webb would like to welcome you to the Early Phase of our school.
This year will begin with a whole school topic based on the book 'Here We Are'. This is specifically aimed to support children in re-connecting with each other and school. It aims to help them make sense of their world and their role in it.
Each class will explore the key themes of:
- Earth’s place in the wider universe
- The Earth’s environment
- Our place on the planet as humans
- How we, as humans, relate to each other
- Other species and our responsibility towards them
- Belonging and community
- Our responsibility as world citizens
PE for Year 1 is on Tuesdays and for Year 2 it is on Mondays. This year we would like children to come into school in their PE kits for these days.
Homework
Each week, the children in Year 1 and 2 are set reading, spelling and MyMaths homework.
Reading – The children in Year 1 and 2 are expected to read to an adult for 10 minutes, 5 times, a week. They have a reading journal that needs to be signed each time they have read. The reading book and journal should be in school every day. In Year 1, books will be changed on Tuesdays and Fridays. In Year 2, books will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays.
Spellings – Spellings will be set on a Friday. The children will take home spelllings based around the phonics sounds they have been learning and appropriate common exception words. These need to be practised at home and the children will then be tested (informally) the following Friday.

Classroom Learning
As a school, we are including Year 1 as ‘Early Years’ and so the current guidance does not require the children to social distance from each other or sit at tables, in rows facing the front. In Year 1, the children will sit on the carpet, in rows facing the front, for whole class teaching and will move through a carousel of activities, in small groups, including some play based activities, during the day. In Year 2, the children will sit in rows facing the front. Children are able to sit on the carpet, in rows facing forwards, for story time and lesson input.
Bottles of hand gel have been placed at each activity and the children are required to gel their hands before they start each new activity. Resources used will be cleaned regularly. Regular handwashing at the start of the day, before eating, after using the toilet and before going home will also be taking place, supervised by an adult.
The photographs below will give you an idea of the classroom layouts in Early Phase.
