Introduction

Mr Tray and Mrs Herbert would like to welcome you to the Middle Phase of our school.

This year will begin with a whole school topic based on the book 'Here We Are'. This is specifically aimed to support children in re-connecting with each other and school. It aims to help them make sense of their world and their role in it.

Each class will explore the key themes of: 

  • Earth’s place in the wider universe 
  • The Earth’s environment
  • Our place on the planet as humans
  • How we, as humans, relate to each other
  • Other species and our responsibility towards them
  • Belonging and community 
  • Our responsibility as world citizens

PE for Year 3 will take place on Mondays and for Year 4 it will be on Tuesdays. This year we ask that children come to school in their PE kits on these days.

There are many exciting things that happen in the Middle Phase. Lots of children will make their First Holy Communion and both classes will have ukulele lessons.

Homework

Reading: We would like the children to read at home and aim for at least 10 pages each day. We would appreciate it if you can sign in your child’s homework book each day to confirm they have read. Book changing is allowed throughout the week and the books will be quarantined for 72 hours before they move to a new household. Reading books and homework books should be in school every day with the children.

Writing: The children will be set writing homework every week focusing on one of the given BISCUIT PLEASE sentence structures about their reading book.

Maths: The children will be set two My Maths tasks each week. The children have their login details are are free to use My Maths at any point for their own revision.

The children are expected to complete a Times Tables Square each week.

Spellings: Spellings will be set on a Monday. The children will take home spelllings based around current learning and common exception words. These need to be practised at home and the children will then be tested (informally) on the Friday.

Multiplication Check - Children in Year 4 will be taking part in the Multiplication Check this year therefore it is important that children in Year 3 and Year 4 are practising their times tables at home as part of their weekly homework.

Classroom Learning

In line with current guidance we are maintaining social distancing between phase bubbles within the school. Year 3 and Year 4 are sat in rows facing the front of the classroom. Each child has an individual resource pack in their drawers so limited equipment is shared. Handwashing is carried out at regular intervals throughout the day alongside frequent hand sanitiser use. Any shared resources are cleaned after each use and reading books are quarantined for 72 hours. All classroom windows are kept open for ventilation throughout the school day. The photographs below will give you an idea of the classroom layout.
