Geography at St Catherine's
At St Catherine’s, we aim to provide a Geography curriculum that promotes a love of the world around us and an opportunity to explore cultures and environments that are significantly different to our own. Teaching will equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, human and physical environments, and the formation of landscapes and environments. Children will also develop their understanding of the world, their role within it and the responsibilities of this role.
Our local community is very important to us at St Catherine’s, so we believe that children should have the chance to explore their local area with fieldwork opportunities. We also encourage children to take an interest in the geographical and environmental challenges that we are facing, such as through discussions about climate change, sustainability and conservation. The importance of looking after our world was bought to the forefront of our teaching when Pope Francis delivered the Laudato si’ for the Care of the Common Home in 2015. Each year, we celebrate Earth Day and World Environment Day as a way of engaging the children with environmental issues and to teach them about the both the positive and negative impact of human intervention.
